It seems like many Americans share in two yearly traditions: making New Year’s Resolutions in January and breaking New Year’s Resolutions in February!
Why is it difficult to create healthy change in our lives, even when we know that it is important? No one wants to be sick, yet rates of chronic illness are climbing each year (especially in younger populations). What is going on, and how can we change for the better? Over the next few weeks, we will help you lay the foundation to get 2022 (and the rest of your life) on the right track! I like to think of this blog series as Pre-Habit Planning.
Before we begin, let’s get a few things straight:
- Healthy change is hard and often uncomfortable. If it were easy, we’d all be living our best, healthiest lives.
- We have health information overload. We must make a simplified plan in order to avoid getting overwhelmed.
- Perfection is fantasy. You don’t have to be perfect to achieve optimal health — you just have to be consistent.
In our jobs as physicians, we see thousands of people every year trying to improve their health in some way. What we have found is that the people who are most successful at improving their health are the ones that wake up each day with a deep desire to be healthy and a simple, focused plan on how to get there.
- I can tell you WHAT to change to be healthy.
- I can tell you HOW to change to be healthy.
- Only you can define WHY you want to be healthy.
- Only you can create the path to good health.
We have to make multiple decisions each day that take us down a path of good health or poor health. Along the way, we will encounter countless obstacles, lose our focus, and question our resolve. Pre-Habit Planning is key at not only getting you started on the right foot but keeping you motivated throughout the process.
